Combination Skin

Hey Miss Beauty Nerd,
A friend and I were discussing the best products for combination skin. We know there’s a ton of products out there for this, but could you recommend the best ones for your followers that won’t break the bank account?
Great job on your posts by the way!

Hi S,
Much thanks to you and your friend for your question! I’m sure other Beauty Nerds are wondering the same thing. Fortunately, there are some great drugstore finds that deliver reliable results without draining your bank account.
For combination skin, it is important to stay hydrated and also keep oil (particularly in problematic zones such as your T-zone) at bay. Pores tend to be enlarged in areas where your oil-glands are over-active, making it more prone to trap dead skin and debris, which ends up becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. This, ultimately of course, will lead to breakouts. Therefore, it is especially important to use a toner with gentle exfoliation properties to keep oil under control (preferably a formula containing alpha or beta hydroxy acids). One of my favourite drugstore brands is Neutrogena and below, I have listed a couple of their basic skincare products that work especially well for combination skin. I also listed Sephora’s blotting papers (but you can use any brand, really) because it’s a great product to keep your skin looking fresh and matte throughout the day. And what’s with Ms. Kreuk, you may ask? I don’t know, maybe we can harness some of her Smallville superpowers and make our skin look as lovely as hers? ;) She also used to be a Neutrogena spokesmodel, so I thought she would be rather fitting for this post… I know, my mind works in strange ways.

{1} Neutrogena Naturals Fresh Cleansing + Makeup Remover: This facial cleanser has garnered amazing reviews especially for its makeup removing abilities. I love that it contains just a small amount of naturally-derived salicylic acid to provide a deep clean for your pores. (~$8)
{2} Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner: This toner is a great example of one with gentle exfoliation because it contains both alpha and beta hydroxy acids. It helps to visibly diminish pore size by sloughing off dead skin cells and also preps the skin for better absorption of your moisturizer. When you apply, make sure to concentrate on oil-prone areas. (~$8)
{3} Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15: I love this lotion because it is quick-absorbing without being greasy, provides 12 hour moisturization, and has a SPF of 15 for daily essential protection. Since you have combination skin, some areas of your face probably feels dry, so using a good lotion will help replenish moisture where it is needed. (~$10)
{4} Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisture Combination Skin: Because you do not need to use an SPF at night (although I do highly recommend to use one for day, whether you get it from an additional sunscreen or your foundation), you can opt for this oil-free moisturizer before bedtime. This lotion will not only moisturize your dry patches but also works to absorb excess oils with its Microsponge® system. Of course, you can use this product for daytime as well, but just make sure you layer on some SPF protection on top. (~$10)
{5} Sephora Matte Blotting Film: My oily-prone friends swear by using blotting papers throughout the day, for eliminating unwanted shininess on their skin. As the weather gets warmer, shininess can become a bigger issue. Blotting papers are nice + lightweight and can be easily be thrown into your purse. These Sephora blotting films will de-grease your complexion without ruining your makeup. (~$10)

Keep in mind that the above recommendations are just general suggestions for combination skin. If you have other skin sensitivities or other skin-related issues, you may discover that there are other products which work better for your skin. Unfortunately with mass products, testers are typically not available. If you do want to experiment with some of the recos above, I would start by purchasing one product first. If it works out, then you can purchase the other items for the complete regimen. Hope this helps!

xoxo,
