Hello Sunshine!

Hi Miss Beauty Nerd,

I live in humid NYC and find that by midday my face is shiny and by the end of the day, my sunscreen/moisturizer has slid into my eyes. Painfully. What are your recommendations for UVA/UVB SPF with light moisture (or even oil control)?

Hi J!

You must’ve read my mind because I have been meaning to do a sunscreen post, now that I can actually feel the summer air! Whether you are running around day-to-day in humid NYC or basking in the sun in some gorgeous locale like Miss Meester, you are definitely going to want to use a good sunscreen. Many sunscreen ingredients, unfortunately, do tend to have a greasier feel. After testing a number of different sunscreen products, I narrowed down my reco’s to four lightweight sunscreens with broad-spectrum protection. Here are my two cents on each one.

{1} Peter Thomas Roth’s Ultra Lite Oil-Free Sunblock – The texture is pretty sheer so it absorbs quickly without any greasy residue. It has UVA/UVB protection and contains an antioxidant cocktail of vitamins A, C, E, B5. To combat sun-induced irritations, it also has aloe vera and allantoin to soothe. ($26)
{2} Bare Escentuals’ SPF 30 Natural Sunscreen – I love the idea of using a powder as your SPF because it feels much lighter than your regular cream/lotion sunscreens. This formula contains micronized titanium dioxide which will minimize the whitish hue characteristic of many titanium dioxide or zinc oxide formulations. It also protects against both UVA and UVB rays and claims not to clog pores or cause breakouts. There is one caveat, however. While I really love the convenience factor of the powder dispensing straight from the brush, these types of applicators tend to get easily clogged. Also, the colour suits tanned skin tones quite well but may look unnaturally dark if you are fair. ($28)
{3} Clarins’ UV Plus Day Screen High Protection SPF 40 – This is my all-time favourite sunscreen. The texture is quite fluid making it really lightweight. It has UVA/UVB protection with PA+++. This means that Clarins has specifically tested and measured for UVA protection (most companies do not) and achieved the highest UVA protection score (3 +’s are the max). It contains a natural mineral sunscreen and protects against urban pollution – perfect for NYC! The price is a little steep ($42), but it lasts a long time. I still think it’s worth every penny!
{4} Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen – This is a great sunscreen if you plan on being outside for extended periods of time, or say if you are lying on a beach. It has an SPF of 55, and also protects against UVA/UVB rays. The texture has a nice powdery finish, really living up to the description “dry-touch sunscreen”. It is oil-free, waterproof, sweatproof and rubproof. What a fantastic sunscreen for the price (~$10)!

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes :) !!
