A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Miss Janette Ewen about her favourite tips + tricks for mastering the carefree, California-girl style. You may recognize Miss Ewen from Inside the Box, which she co-hosts with Ty Pennington. She has been called one of Canada’s ‘leading decor and lifestyle experts.’ Needless to say, I was thrilled to take notes on some beach girl beauty tips from this style maven…
Hi Janette! Nice to meet you! With your time spent living in California, you have surely mastered the signature California girl style that we are absolutely loving for summer. We are excited to have you share your “SoCal” beauty tips with our Beauty Nerd readers.
Miss Beauty Nerd: We are loving the loose beachy waves seen on the likes of Lauren Conrad and Kate Bosworth. How would you go about achieving that look? Specifically, what tools and hair products would you recommend?
Janette: I love this look. I would start by using John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Controlled Lightening Spray… this spray will give you that natural sun-kissed blonde look… and it is a very healthy approach, I use it! I also use John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Lightening shampoo and conditioner. This helps give you a sun kissed blonde look that is very natural. I’d then towel dry your hair, apply a volume building spray or mouse, then dry your hair with a round brush. To finish your look, apply hot rollers or Velcro rollers to create loose waves… you can also think about adding a braid across the crown or along the side of your head… very “The Hills”.
Miss Beauty Nerd: What are your thoughts on salon spray tans versus DIY (store bought) versions at home? Do you think the results are comparable?
Janette: I think they are totally comparable, in fact I think at home products are better and way more affordable. I’ve done the salon route and you are looking at $40-$80 per application… and often I ended up with streaks on my feet. I adore using Jergens natural GLOW at home. They have such a great range of products for a number of skin tones and types. Jergens natural GLOW gives you a gradual, healthy, balanced tan… just like Jennifer Aniston!
Miss Beauty Nerd: Which beauty products do you consider your must-haves when you are trying to achieve the perfect sun-kissed look?
Janette: I am all about John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder, and Jergens natural GLOW. I love OPI “I think Pink” nail polish (it shows off your tan), and I also like a tanned loose powder. Smashbox’s loose powder in tan is lightweight and gives a healthy glow. Lastly, add a touch of clear gloss and waterproof mascara.
Miss Beauty Nerd: Is there a way to wear a bit of makeup to the beach without it melting off? If so, are there tried and true products that you would recommend for the beach?
Janette: Yes, I LOVE Clinique’s tinted moisturizer, I use this (SPF 25) all the time. Add Blistex balm and waterproof mascara and you are good to go!
Miss Beauty Nerd: I often see girls overload themselves with bronzer, to the degree that it starts to look unnatural. What is the appropriate amount to wear and how do you know when you’ve been too heavy-handed? Also, where are the best spots on your face to apply bronzer?
Janette: OUCH this is not a good look!! This is why I prefer building a natural tan through moisturizers (as mentioned above)… I avoid any cream or foundation bronzers, they are just too hard to blend and always look unnatural. Try a bronzer highlight powder to compliment your tanned skin. I really like Laura Mercer’s bronzer, but be sure to apply it with a loose, high quality brush and ONLY in the areas of your face the sun would hit first (nose, chin, forehead, and cheeks) and KEEP it natural!
Miss Beauty Nerd: On behalf of myself and my fellow Beauty Nerds, thank you so much for taking the time to share your “SoCal” beauty tips! We will be sure to take your advice and put it to practice!
