Finally the weather’s warming up and I’m excited about wearing dresses and skirts again! Except… for the fact that my legs are a ghostly shade of pale. I know, real attractive, right? Sooo, you know what that means – it’s time to get into my regular self-tanning routine again. I hope you are achieving your gorgeous tan through similar means, as opposed to using the tanning beds or lying out in the sun. You don’t need me to nag you about the cancer-causing and age-accelerating effects of the latter methods, do you??
Plus, getting a gorgeous sunless tan is super easy (sans harmful UV rays). Here are my 3 steps (along with a couple tips) for a streakless, flawless and natural-looking tan.

Step 1: Use a all-over body scrub to slough off those dead skin cells. You want to make sure that your skin is nice and smooth for an even application. Dry, rough patches will be accentuated by self-tanners, thereby leaving a splotchy application, so try to minimize this as much as possible. Pay special attention to your knees and elbows, areas most prone to dryness. One of my favourite scrubs is Fresh’s Brown Sugar Body Polish. Formulated with brown sugar and a blend of moisturizing oils, your skin will be silky smooth in only a moments time. Don’t forget to enjoy the process – create a little at-home spa experience for yourself!
Step 2: Take your favourite self-tanner and apply all over or just wherever you want that golden glow (I typically concentrate on my legs). My 3 biggest pet peeves about self-tanners are that they typically smell terrible, produce an unflattering orange colour, and take 30 minutes to dry (who has time to stand around naked for half an hour)? Bliss’ Tan for All Seasons* really addresses all these issues. It is formulated with special odour-encapsulators (while also giving a light, citrus scent), develops into a gorgeous non-orange golden tan (it also has a transfer-resistant, built-in bronzer allowing you to see exactly where you’ve applied), and dries in 5 minutes flat (due to the aerosol delivery). Don’t be alarmed by the product’s purplish hue – you just need to rub it in evenly and the end result will be completely natural. The only caveat is that you need to work fairly quickly, since it dries quickly – spray in strokes and rub into your skin immediately. You can apply lotion to your knees and elbows prior to self-tanner application to avoid over-tanning these areas. I usually do my application in the bathtub as it can get a little messy. Don’t worry, your tub will rinse clean with some water. Wash your hands immediately after application to avoid staining your hands. Remember that the colours in self-tanners are buildable. If you want to deepen your tan, wait 24 hours before reapplying. Keep reapplying every 24 hours until you achieve your desired shade. After that, you can reapply once a week for maintenance.
Step 3: In general, self-tanners can be a little drying to your skin. The spray-versions are especially drying. Therefore, don’t forget to moisturize in between applications. The Biotherm Sun After Sparkle Cream is an amazing body moisturizer. Although it is positioned for after-sun, I like to use as just a regular body moisturizer. With a hint of shimmer, it really enhances your new tan. You should wait several hours before applying moisturizer though, otherwise you will dilute the effects of your self-tanner.
Good luck and happy friday!!
