With Great Scentiments…

I would like to share with you a cause that has greatly touched me when I discovered it through a post from Sue Phillips, a Fragrance Expert, who is working hard at raising awareness about the correlation between smell, taste, memory and its effect on people suffering from Alzheimer’s.

Years ago, during my studies in cosmetic science, I have developed this deep appreciation for the sense of smell, because out of all 5 of our senses, it is the least understood. What we do know, however, is that our olfactory senses affects the limbic system in our brain which is tightly linked to emotions and memories. Think about smells that elicit very specific childhood memories. For me, it is my mother’s freshly baked cakes during a rainy day. It is very powerful. Now imagine if you start to lose that memory, much like those suffering from Alzheimer’s. It can have a very adverse impact to one’s emotional well-being.

Sue Phillips, from Scenterprises, Ltd. has organized the Alzheimer’s Fundraiser in honor of her mother Grace Phillips who suffers from this disease. Grace Phillips is a Calligraphist and Watercolorist from South Africa and her beautiful collection of artwork is open for bidding in a silent auction. On October 5, you can log onto their website and bid on a collection of 70 years worth of Grace’s artwork portraying South African scenes, florals, portraits and landscapes. If you are in San Diego, you can participate at the Sensory Celebration which will be filled with art, scent, wine, food and great music at the Schaetzel Center Scripps Memorial Hospital. 25% of the proceeds from the evening plus the sales of the arts during the 3 month exhibition will go to Scripps and Alzheimers. It will be a fabulous event with spectacular prizes including the possibility to win a trip for 2 to South Africa!

I urge you to take the time to create and cherish the memories that we have with our loved ones, and in honor of this cause, please check out this amazing fundraiser. Deadline to RSVP is October 1st! Both RSVP’s and bids can be done at www.2marvelous4words.com.
